ALED celebrated a significant milestone this week as 75 legal professionals from 28 African countries graduated from the organization's Fellowship Program in Law and Economic Development.

A New Generation of Leaders

The 12-month program combined rigorous academic training with practical experience in policy development, legal drafting, and economic analysis. Fellows participated in seminars led by leading scholars and practitioners, completed research projects on pressing development challenges, and gained hands-on experience through placements with government agencies and international organizations.

"These graduates represent the future of African legal and economic leadership," said Dr. Fatima Diallo, Director of ALED's Education Programs. "They leave equipped with the knowledge, skills, and networks needed to drive transformative change in their home countries."

Program Highlights

Key components of the fellowship included:

  • Core Curriculum: Courses in international economic law, development finance, regulatory theory, and comparative legal systems.
  • Research Projects: Each fellow completed an original research paper addressing a specific development challenge in their home country.
  • Policy Practicum: Three-month placements with partner organizations including the African Development Bank, UNECA, and various national ministries.
  • Leadership Development: Workshops on communication, negotiation, and strategic planning.

Alumni Network

Graduates join ALED's growing alumni network, which provides ongoing professional development opportunities, collaborative research initiatives, and access to a community of like-minded professionals across the continent.

Applications for the 2026-2027 fellowship cohort will open in March, with an expanded program offering 100 positions.
